Background

Bula Batiki is a community-owned business that produces organic virgin coconut oil on the remote island of Batiki, Fiji. It is the first indigenous community-owned Fijian business to have achieved USDA NOP and Organic EU certification, ISO 22000 and HACCP Australia certification.

Bula Batiki started in 2015 as an Association, and has recently been registered as a Cooperative, which is jointly owned by the members of 45 households representing 300 villagers. Women and men play equal leadership roles in the business. The aim of all those involved is to create and maintain a fair and equitable livelihood for the villagers of Batiki which respects the environment and does not force the community to fall back on selling raw material or agricultural goods with little value added.

With support of the Fijian Government, Bula Batiki is currently diversifying its international product range and transitioning to become a surf lifestyle brand. It will continue to produce virgin coconut oil as the base product from which other value-added products are made.
